Why SBBK?

Bonsai stay small because they are carefully grown in containers, with just the right balance of care and attention. Each type of bonsai has its own personality and needs, and one of the best parts of living in the Bay Area is that we can grow so many different kinds. From the hardy California Juniper of our deserts, to the majestic Coastal Redwoods, the twisting California Oaks on our hillsides, and colorful flowering trees like bougainvillea, pomegranate, and azaleas—there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

We invite our members to look around and notice the beauty in everyday life, whether hiking in nature or exploring the city. Inspiration for bonsai is everywhere! For more than 50 years, our club members have been sharing their knowledge, teaching bonsai, and building beautiful collections. And each year, we welcome world-class bonsai artists who give demonstrations and hands-on workshops to help everyone—whether beginner or experienced—grow on their bonsai journey.
